It has been noted onsite that traffic queues have been a problem in the AM peak period since last week. We do not believe this is a result of our usual Traffic Management which is erected off-peak after 9.30am as this has been no different over the past couple of weeks with little impact on queues. Queues during peak hours are more than likely a result of the closure of Haywood Road which was implemented Monday 23/09/2019. Having reviewed live traffic information during the period of disruption, it would appear that queues are starting from Haywood Road and backing up to Stanks which is then affecting all other approaches to the Stanks Island. The queue appears to reduce once motorists have passed Haywood Road and are proceeding to Wedgnock Roundabout. I believe this is due to a number of factors such as: - The closure is new to motorists and will take a period of time for the public to adjust accordingly and follow the diversionary route. - Motorists unaware of the closure are slowing down at Haywood Road to see if they are able to access accordingly which is having a knock on effect on other vehicles having to subsequently wait. This should hopefully resolve itself over a period of time once the regular commuters familiarise themselves with the new arrangements. - A number of motorists are ignoring the 'No Right Turn' into Budbrooke Road from Birmingham Road and holding back traffic while doing this manoeuvre. However there is physically no way to prevent this manoeuvre as it would also restrict the Right Turn out of Budbrooke Road.
With regards to the traffic outside peak hours, the need to introduce temporary traffic lights or other systems to control the movement of traffic passing through the works is necessary to allow the works to be carried out safely, the works are being carried out in stages to help minimise delays and advance notice of the planned works is provided to make drivers aware; this can help to reduce the numbers of vehicles passing through the area. In response to the current situation and in an effort to reduce delays we have instructed the Contractor undertaking the works to manually control the traffic signals, this will help to respond to changing traffic conditions throughout the course of the day. I am aware that this area of Warwick is particularly busy and a degree of delay during the works is therefore unavoidable, at busier times of day if alternative routes are available you may wish to consider avoiding this location while the works are ongoing over the next few months, although I do appreciate this may not be a practical option for yourself. We will continue to monitor the queuing issues and have a further review/meeting with the Contractor and WCC network management to see what other measures can be adopted to avoid adverse congestion. I can assure you that we are taking this issue seriously as we want to avoid congestion and especially queuing onto the A46 mainline due to the H&S risks this poses on the high speed trunk road network. Please let me know if you have any further queries and thank you for your patience while we have worked to address this matter.
Kind regards.
