I’m a resident of Wilmhurst Road, Warwick, CV34 5LN, in the vicinity of the Stanks Island/Birmingham Road coridoor improvement works scheduled to finish in Spring 2020. We are delighted that the works are now underway after the various delays (the reasons for which we understand and appreciate) and are looking forward to the positive impact on traffic flow in the area. We have also been pleased to see the way in which NMCN has, to date, interacted with the local community, asking for ideas for community improvement projects to be funded by the contractor, and being generally friendly and helpful in interactions with residents in the affected area etc.
My reason for writing is to register my extreme concern, and seek an immediate resolution from you, in respect of the road safety issues created by the closure of the footpath into Warwick, near to the Budbrooke Industrial Estate entrance. The walking route for anyone walking into Warwick Town - for school, work, amenities etc - along the roads from the Wilmhurst Road area, or beyond, is now extremely dangerous, necessitating the crossing of several roads near to the Birmingham Road/Wedgnock Lane island.
I had a frightening experience trying to cross last week with my young daughter, my husband found himself caught in the middle of the road as he tried to cross on Wednesday night, and several of my neighbours have reported similar extremely scary and dangerous incidents. As one of my neighbours pointed out, drivers coming down the A425 from Stanks Island have their eyes on the traffic on the Birmingham Road/Wedgnock Island and are not used to people crossing in the vicinity of the island. Whilst we understand that the footpath may need to be temporarily closed to enable the progression of the roadworks, surely there ought to be a clearly sign-posted, safe, alternative for pedestrians for the duration of the closure? As far I am aware there isn’t any alternative provision for pedestrians. Has anyone involved in the scheme of works ‘tested’ the current walking route in Warwick along the roads affected by the works/pavement closures?
Please could I have a response as to what the Council/NMCN considers can be done (and when it can be done) to mitigate the high risk of danger to persons and traffic in this area as a direct result of the temporary closure of the footpath.
