Draconian mowing of roadside verges
Reported anonymously at 13:04, Mon 16 September 2019
Sent to Stratford-on-Avon District Council and Warwickshire County Council 2 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 1769165.
I live in Swalcliffe but walk regularly throughout SP33. I am depressed and appalled on the increased intensity both as to frequency and rigour of the mowing of the roadside verges of our country lanes and minor roads. This blanket mowing is having a disastrous effect on the area's biodiversity particularly migrant insect eating warblers. No vegetation means no nectar, no insects, no birds. The whole area is being reduced to an ecological desert, It might look pretty but its biodiversity is declining. I realise that overgrown verges near accident blackspots or driver blindspots need to be cut back but I would plead that your contractors are instructed to be less draconian in their work. The lane I have pinpointed carries hardly any traffic yet its verges are mowed as if they were private lawns. I have written to Oxfordshire CC on a similar vein and their reply was the mowing should only take place once a year and not be lower than one metre. Could I plead with you to also follow this norm and particularly do the cutting before the bird nesting season in March/April is underway. I hope you understand that my 'problem' is not an eccentric rant but an appeal to help restore the Warwickshire countryside's biodiversity for the benefit of us all and for future generations.
